Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid were competing in a fierce title race. After two nail-biting games in the last matchday, Atleti were crowned champions of Spain. For Real Madrid to win LaLiga, Los Blancos had to win their game, and they needed Atleti to lose or draw their game. As long as Atlético Madrid won their last game, they would win the league.

Real faced Villarreal and Atleti faced Real Valladolid. Villarreal’s game was extremely important for them too, as they were competing against Real Sociedad and Real Betis for the two spots which would allow them to play in the UEFA Europa League next season. Although Villarreal are in the final of the Europa League this season, which, if won by them, will allow them to play in the UEFA Champions League next season, the Europa League spot would be good for them in case they fail to beat Manchester United in the Europa League final this season.

The first goal of the two games was scored by Óscar Plano for Valladolid against Atleti. Failing to seize that oppurtunity, Real Madrid conceded the first goal in their match, which was scored by Yeremi Pino 20 minutes after kickoff. Although Karim Benzema scored a header in the 55th minute, the goal was given offside, and thus disallowed. To make matters worse for Los Blancos, Ángel Correa scored for Atleti around 2 minutes later. After Correa equalized, Luis Suárez gave his team the lead in the 67th minute. They would win the league if the score remained the same in their match. Real Madrid was still determined to win their match, though. Benzema scored in the 87th minute and equalized for Real. Luka Modrić gave his team the lead in the second minute of stoppage time, giving them hope in the title race.

Nonetheless, unfortunately for them, Atlético Madrid won their game, and thus won their 11th league title, which is their first one since the 2013/2014 season.
